
32 monks walk the the religious rite called Thudong. Starting 2 months ago, all the way from Thailand heading for the Borobudur temple in Magelang, Central Java to celebrate the Vesak Day.
Various Locations, TVRI World - Based on information from the Religious Affairs’ Ministry, Thudong is a spiritual journey of monks by walking thousands of kilometer. Thudong has been a Buddhists tradition for centuries. When performing Thudong the monks are walking and wearing the monastic robes known as “Kasaya”, a pair of sandals, and socks.
The 32 monks began the Thudong ritual from Nakhon Si Thammarat, Thailand on march 23rd and will arrive at Borobudur temple on Wednesday, May 31st.
The Thai monks already passed through four countries covering a total distance of around 2,600 km on foot. They walked from Thailand to Malaysia-Singapore border before crossing by boat. They’ve arrived in Batam last week and entered Jakarta last Thursday (11/05).
During their journey the monks did not sleep in hotels but stopped by at a number of monasteries along the way. Thudong tradition emphasized on meditation and practices of asceticism. The ritual is recognized by the Indonesian Record Museum.
